The focus of day two of creation is the creation of water because water is essential for life. God began to form the earth to be habitable for life by creating water and forming the atmosphere around the earth. Genesis 1:6-8 says 6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So, the evening and the morning were the second day. (NKJV). This does not say how God did it. It merely says God did it. It perfectly describes what we observe about the earth today with our oceans, rivers and lakes and our atmosphere.
All living organisms are cellular. Living organisms consist of a single tissue cell or they are composed of multiple living cells. Either way, water is essential for life. Water has a very unique chemical property that allows it to transport nutrients into cells and waste out of the cells. Its chemical formula is H2O, which includes two positively charged hydrogen atoms and one negatively charged oxygen atom. This unique molecular form allows water to form a polarity that attracts, breaks apart and dissolves solids.
This polarity also allows the transport of nutrients and wastes across living cell membranes. Because of the unique chemical composition of water, it has been called the “Universal Solvent”. Not everything is soluble in water (e.g.., oil and water do not mix well). However, more things are soluble in water than any other molecule. Also, water is close to neutral pH, which makes it gentle on delicate living tissues.
Water purified to less than 2 parts per million of dissolved solids has a pH of about 6.5, which is just under the neutral pH of 7. The blood in a live human body is about 7.3 pH, which is just above the neutral pH of 7. The pH scale goes from 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Anything above 7 is considered alkaline (or a base) and anything under 7 is considered acidic (or an acid).
Orange juice is acidic at about 3pH. Water with magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate is about 10pH. Both are safe to drink, but orange juice is acidic and mineralized water is alkaline. Just so you know the extremes, sulfuric acid is a 1pH and liquid drain cleaner is a 14. Both are deadly to living organisms.
Water coming into most homes has been cleaned by a water treatment plant. Then many chemicals are added to kill bacteria or protect the pipes through which the water will be pumped. This water is then pumped through hundreds or thousands of miles of pipe. Water gathers up solids from the pipes as it passes through. The EPA says your municipal water is safe to drink, but it is loaded with numerous chemicals and solids that have dissolved into it along the way. That is why purified water or purified mineralized water is essential for living organisms to function and thrive.
These properties of water are why scientists are always looking for evidence of water else where in the Universe in their search for life other than life on earth. Modern science considers water to be essential for life. Without it, there is no life. God obviously knew this as well. He created the heavens and the earth, then light, and then water. He separated the waters and created a rain cycle between the atmosphere and the oceans to water the dry lands.
On day one of creation, God made time, matter, energy and space and separated light from darkness. On day two, He created water on earth and separated it into a life sustaining atmosphere and life breeding oceans. Is it possible all of this happened by accident? Consider Albert Einstein’s quote, “God does not play dice with the universe.” Einstein recognized there was such a mathematical certainty and unique orderliness found in the universe, that it doesn’t just happen by chance. In other words, everything is mathematically predictable and nothing is left to chance.
Thus, God does not play dice with the universe. And Moses fully understood God, matter, energy, time, space and the necessity of water for life as evidenced by the first seven verses of the Bible. Moses sums this up in approximately the first 153 English words of the Bible. It is remarkable feat to cover this much scientific truth 3,500 years ago so succinctly and precisely.
